The easiest way to transfer VHS tapes to the computer to save precious memories

Love It

Remember when VHS was the ‘it’ technology? Well, a few things have changed since those days and as you probably realize, the VCR is obsolete. So much so, that you probably have dozens of tapes lying around and no VHS player to even watch them with.

If you find yourself in this predicament, it’s time to transfer those precious home movies onto your computer so you can relive the past whenever you want. You will need to track down a VCR, though, so if you don’t have one start asking around. And, it’s important to note this tutorial is for transferring home movies onto your computer, not copyrighted content like shows or movies.

Excited to go through all those old movies? Here’s how to get started.

What you need:

– A VHS player with audio and video output on the back

– A computer

– Space on your computer, 1 hour 750 MB of space

– Or a hard drive to transfer the tape to

– A video you want to record from

– Adaptor that connects you from your VCR to your computer

Transferring VHS to your computer:

1. Get connected

Connect the adaptor to the VHS player and your computer.

2. Download software

The Elgato Adaptor comes with software to help you download the movie, so put the CD in your computer and download that.

3. Set up the files

Once it’s installed the software will walk you through the process from naming the file to making sure you’re connected by checking visuals and audio.

4. Record

Hit the big red button on your screen to begin the recording process, then, press play on your VCR.

5. Wait for the movie to play through

Your movie records onto your computer in real time. So, however long your VHS tape is, that’s how long you will have to wait for it to finish recording on your computer.

6. Finish recording

When your VHS tape is done playing, hit the stop recording button on the computer.

7. Save

Now you save the file on your computer or your external hard drive. From here you also have the option to upload it to Youtube or iTunes, for example.

Much easier than you thought, right? Be sure to check out the video below for added tips on the transferring process. And, don’t forget to share this article with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.
